Be   Ser o estar

I am (I'm) We are (we're)
You are (you're) You are (you're)
He is (he's) They are (they're)
She is (she's) It is (it's)

Native speakers use the short form, such as I'm, he's and so on. 
It is better to begin using the short form as soon as possible. 
After some time only the short form will be used in the lessons. 
But for now let's practice the long form of be in order to understand the structure better.

Los usuarios nativos del Ingles utilizan la forma corta como: I'm ,he's,etc. Es mejor empezar a utilizar esa forma corta tan pronto como sea posible. Despues de un tiempo solo la forma corta sera utilizada en estas lecciones.Pero por ahora practicaremos la forma larga de be para que nos sea posible comprender la estructura mejor.

It is a pen.

English has no masculine or feminine like other languages. 
So the pronouns it and they are used to talk about objects. 
Look at the pictures and memorize the words:

El Ingles no tiene masculino o femenino como otros lenguajes. De manera que los pronombres it y they son utilizados para hablar de los objetos. Observa las figuras y memoriza las palabras:

The letters -s and -es are usually used for plurals. Notice that the article a is never used with plurals.

Las letras -s y -es son usualmente utilizadas para el plural. Date cuenta que el articulo a nunca es utilizado con plurales.

It is a ball. They are balls.

Exercise 2    Answer with the correct singular or plural form. Contesta con la forma singular o plural correcta.

1. What is it? It is a ball. What are they? They are balls.

3. What is it? pen. What are they? .

4. What is it? watch. What are they? .

5. What is it? egg. What are they? .

Notice how questions are asked. It is incorrect to say 
What it is? or What they are? in English. The questions are in a different order. This is a basic rule when asking questions.

Date cuenta como se plantean las preguntas. Es incorrecto decir  en Ingles What it is ? o What they are ?  Las preguntas se hacen en un orden diferente. Esta es una regla basica cuando planteamos preguntas.

What is it? It is a pen.

The article a is used with consonants, and an is used 
with vowels. Remember
not to use the articles a or an with 
plurals.
Later we will study the article in more detail. 
Look at the examples:

El articulo a es utilizado con consonantes y an es utilizado con vocales. Recuerda no utilizar los articulos a o an con plurales. Mas tarde estudiaremos el articulo con mayor detalle. Mira estos ejemplos:

It is a pen.    It is an egg.

I am a teacher.

Be is also used to talk about people and jobs.
Look at the examples:

Be es tambien utilizado para hablar de las personas y los trabajos.

Mira estos ejemplos:

He is a doctor.  She is a teacher.
They are policemen.  I am a nurse.
They are students.  He is a tourist.
We are engineers.  She is a secretary.

Where are you from?

I am from Japan. I am Japanese.

Be is used to talk about nationalities. Look at the examples:

Be es utilizado para hablar acerca de nacionalidades. Mira estos ejemplos:

He is from Britain. He is British.
She is from America. She is American.
They are from Canada. They are Canadian.

Exercise 4    Match the countries with the nationalities. Use the answers below. Relaciona los paises con las nacionalidades. Utiliza las respuestas de abajo.

Italian - German - Spanish - South African

Where are you? I am at home.

Be is used to talk about location. Look at the examples:

in the kitchen in the factory
in the basement in the warehouse

Lesson 5:    Location and Asking Questions

Where is he? He is at home.

It's time to begin asking questions. Remember the order of questions with be. Don't forget that it is incorrect to say  Where he is? in English. Look at the examples:

Es tiempo de empezar a hacer preguntas. Recuerda el orden de las preguntas con be. No olvides que es incorrecto decir en Ingles Where he is? . Mira estos ejemplos:

Where is John? He is in the bathroom.
Where is Sue? She is at work.
Where are the students? They are in the library.
