Lesson 6:    Each Other raudio.gif (1185 bytes)

We often call each other.

Each other is used to express reciprocal action on the part of both speakers.

Marsha and I talk to each other often.
We always give each other gifts.

When we say We always give each other gifts it means that the people give gifts to one another. I give you a gift, and you give me a gift.

Exercise 6    Use each other to make sentences below.

1. I play with Tom, and he plays with me.

2. I cook for my wife, and she cooks for me.

3. Ted often calls Jane, and Jane often calls Ted.

4. I always give my friend gifts, and he always gives me gifts.

5. My girlfriend often goes out with me, and I often go
out with my girlfriend.

Lesson 7:    Like raudio.gif (1185 bytes)

I like my neighbors very much.

The verb like is often used in English. When it is used with another verb, the preposition to must follow.

I like to read.  She likes to study English.
We like to watch TV.

It isn't correct to say, for example, I like read. You must  say I like to read.

Exercise 7     Look at the pictures and make sentences with like to and the verbs below.

work out, go for a walk, travel, dance, read, watch TV
readr.gif (3275 bytes) danzrs.gif (2572 bytes) travlrr.gif (2341 bytes)
He _______. They _______. He _______.
walkrs.gif (2561 bytes) cochpotato.gif (2568 bytes) mussls.gif (2190 bytes)
They _______. She _______. He _______.

Answers

1. He likes to read. 2. They like to dance. 3. He likes to travel.
4. They like to go for a walk. 5. She likes to watch TV. 6. He likes to work out.

We can sometimes also use like with verbs in a different way.
The verbs which follow like can take an -ing ending. In this way the verbs become verbal nouns. The preposition to isn't necessary with -ing. We will discuss verbal nouns in more detail in the future.

I like to go for a walk.     OR    I like going for a walk.

She likes to listen to music.     OR    She likes listening to music.

It doesn't matter how you use like in the examples above, because the sentences are the same in meaning.

Exercise 8     Change the sentences below to use the -ing ending. Remember that the meaning is the same. You can use either style.

1. I like to go out.

2. She likes to dance.

3. My mother likes to shop.

4. Phillip likes to work out.

5. We like to give each other gifts.

Remember not to answer Yes, I like or Yes, he likes
This is incorrect.

Lesson 8:    The Object Pronouns II raudio.gif (1185 bytes)

I don't know him.

Let's continue studying the object pronouns. Usually English speakers place the clause very much at the end of the sentence.

I like him very much.  She likes him very much.
We like it very much.

It sounds unnatural to say, for example, She very much likes him. Try to remember to place the clause very much at the end of the sentence after the noun or pronoun.

English speakers use the prepostion by when talking about means of transport.
