Lesson 12:    On the Telephone I raudio.gif (1185 bytes)

Could I speak to Ms. Owens, please?

It's necessary now to learn how to speak properly on the telephone. The most important thing is to speak politely.Speaking on the telephone in English requires a very polite dialog. We'll begin with the request forms of Could, Can,May and I'd (I would) like to with a typical business call.

Could I
Can I
May I
speak to Mr. Williams, please?
I'd like to speak to Mr. Williams, please.

Could I speak to Mr. Williams, please?
Can I speak to Ms. Spencer, please?

As you can see there are various ways to make requests on the telephone. In the U.S.A Could I and Can I are used more frequently than May I. I'd like to is very polite and more formal. For now let's practice using Could I. Look at the dialog below.

A: Channing and Associates. This is Becky Inman speaking.
Can I help you?
B: Yes, please. Could I speak to Mark Adelson, please?
A: May I ask who is calling?
B: This is Eddie Abner from Soft Media.
A: One moment, Mr. Abner.

Notice how the word please is used at the end of the request. Students often forget to say please when speaking on the telephone. And because this is a business call it is important to be very polite and formal. Also notice how the person says:
This is Eddie
Abner from Soft Media.

Remember to give first  and last names when making a business call. And don't forget your company name!

Exercise 15     Practice making requests for the people
