Lesson 6:    About to and in

Paul is in his car. He's going to work.

It's necessary to review the prepositions to and in. Remember 
that in is not really a motion preposition. Sometimes people use 
in
when talking about entering a place (although into or inside is more acceptable). But for destination to must be used. It isn't possible to say, for example, I'm going in work. You must 
say I'm going to work.

The bank is next to the laundromat.

Turn left and then go straight.

Let's learn some phrases for direction.

Turn right.  Turn left.  Go straight.  Go past the school.
Turn left at the lights.  Turn right at Salisbury Avenue. 
Turn right at the next street.
Go to Park Avenue.  Go across the street.
Go to the end of the block.
Go down the block.  Go around the corner.
Go across the bridge.

As you already know the English imperative requires no special grammatical form as in other languages. It is simply the infinitive without the preposition to.

Excuse me. Could you tell me how to get to the shopping mall?

There are a few different ways to ask for directions. But one 
of the most common ways is to use Could. Practice 
the phrases below.

Excuse me. Could you tell me how to get to the hotel?
  Excuse me. Could you tell me how to get to the bank?
  Excuse me. Could you tell me how to get to the gas station?

Exercise 8    Practice asking for directions using the information below. It is important to do this exercise many times in order to understand how to use Could. SPEAK!
