Now you know how to ask for people on the telephone.
But what happens if they are out of the office? There are various possibilities.

I'm afaid

I'm
afraid Mr. Tate is in a meeting right now. |
When we say I'm afraid
it means "we would like to help or solve the problem but can't because it's out of our control." It's a very
polite way to inform people
you can't help them. Let's continue
our telephone dialog from Unit 7C.
A: Channing and Associates. This is Becky Inman
speaking.
Can I help you?
B: Yes, please. Could I speak to Mark Adelson, please?
A: I'm afraid Mr. Adelson is in a meeting. Can I take a message?
B: Yes, please. Could you tell him Eddie Abner called?
A: Certainly, Mr. Abner.
Notice again how Could
is used. Also certainly is used for yes, and it is very polite. It is also important to memorize the phrase
