Last summer I went to Europe.

Let's practice using the past tense with adjectives.

The weather was great.  The weather was OK.
The weather was terrible.
The food was fantastic.  The entertainment was wonderful.

Last summer I had a vacation. I went to Hawaii. It was great. The weather was fantastic. We stayed in a beautiful hotel by the beach. 
It was really nice.

Every day we went water skiing. My father skis very well, but I 
don't. I sunbathed on the
beach and rested by the pool. The pool 
was very big. There were many people in the pool.

We also ate in several fancy restaurants. Some of them were
really exotic and unusual.
I tried a lot of different food. It was wonderful. I had a super vacation.

Where was Bob?

He was at the shopping mall.

Let's review prepositions with the past tense of be.

  We were in the office.  They were on vacation.  She was in a meeting.

Exercise 7    Choose the correct preposition in, on or at. Sometimes more than one is acceptable.

1. He was Japan last week.
2. Marty was a training course last Monday.

3. Tanya was vacation last month.
4. I was a business trip last week.

5. She was lunch when you called.
6. The boss was a meeting all morning.

7. I was the train station last night.
8. The trade fair was January.

9. She visited her parents the weekend.
10. Jenny was work this morning.

Paul wasn't hungry. He didn't eat.

It's necessary to review how verbs and adjectives work together.

  He wasn't on time. He got up late.  He was tired. He slept.

Exercise 8    Decide which verbs are best for the sentences below.

1. Paul wasn't prepared. He the examination. 
2. Jack was very hungry.
He a big lunch. 
3. Patricia was very thirsty. She some water.

4. Michael was very sick. He to the doctor. 
5. The boss was very angry.

Notice how the conjunction because is used.

Melissa was afraid. She screamed. Melissa screamed because 
she was afraid.

I went to college after school.   

We studied connecting words earlier for instructions. Let's look again at common conjunctions used in the past and present tenses.

  after, before, when, until
He became famous after the first movie.
He'll return before 5:00.
He left school when he was sixteen.
She'll be here until tomorrow.

 

Lesson 10:    Used to raudio.gif (1185 bytes)

I used to play the guitar.   

Used to is used to express a past habit or state. It is not used 
in the present.

  He used to smoke.  He used to eat a lot of fatty food.
  She used to like her job.  They used to be angry all the time.

Of course the Past Simple can also be used, but not in 
quite the same way.

He smoked when he was younger.    

He ate a lot of fatty food when he was a teenager.

The negative form is didn't use to.

She didn't use to hate her job.

They didn't used to be angry all the time.
